Parliament has considered the amendment to the Law on Grants in its first reading under an expedited procedure and supported it unanimously with 80 votes.

According to the Draft Law, funds issued by diplomatic missions, consular offices, and representatives of international organizations accredited in Georgia will no longer be considered a "grant" if they are used or intended for activities stemming from the political or public interests, approaches, or relations of a foreign government or a foreign political party.

As the rapporteur and Chairman of the Legal Issues Committee, Archil Gorduladze, noted, if a foreign Embassy receives funds from its own state to carry out its operations, these funds will not be classified as a grant, and therefore, the consent of the Government of Georgia will not be required.

Under the project, if an embassy intends to issue a grant to a citizen of Georgia - whether a physical or legal entity - agreement with the Government of Georgia will still be necessary for such actions.
