The European Parliament and the Council of Europe have granted the Black Sea Submarine Cable Project [BSSCP] the status of a Project of Mutual Interest [PMI].

According to EU legislation, approved PMI will receive active legal, financial, and strategic support from the European Union.

The BSSCP has successfully undergone an active technical-economic assessment at the European Commission`s Directorate-General for Energy, which once again confirmed its importance, necessity, and potential.

Once the PMI status is officially granted, the Black Sea Submarine Cable Project will fall under EU energy legislation, meaning that procedures for obtaining study and construction permits will be simplified. Additionally, receiving PMI status provides highly significant reputational benefits for shaping the project`s business and investment model.

The BSSCP envisages the construction of a digital and high-voltage submarine transmission network that will connect the electricity systems of Georgia and Europe. The project involves building approximately 1,155 km of cable (1,115 km submarine and 40 km onshore) with a capacity of 1,300 MW.

The implementation of the project will contribute to strengthening the energy security of Europe and the South Caucasus region, developing the renewable energy sector, and increasing transit capabilities between the mentioned regions.

The project has been included in the 2026–2036 Ten-Year Network Development Plan (TYNDP) of the European Network of Transmission System Operators for Electricity (ENTSO-E).
