White House confirms Trump has weighed U.S. exit from NATO - WSJ

President Trump has considered withdrawing the U.S. from the North Atlantic Treaty Organization, the White House said, and he planned to discuss the issue in a meeting later Wednesday with the alliance’s Secretary-General Mark Rutte, writes The Wall Street Journal.

“Perhaps you’ll hear directly from the president following that meeting later this afternoon”, White House press secretary Karoline Leavitt said.

Trump has raised a possible withdrawal - which would face bipartisan opposition in Congress - amid frustrations that allies refused to help open the Strait of Hormuz, The Wall Street Journal has reported.

Trump has explored ways to weaken the U.S. commitment to the organization. A 2023 law prohibits a president from unilaterally withdrawing the U.S. from NATO. Doing so requires a two-thirds vote in the Senate or a joint act of Congress”, - reads the article.
